Contributions of post-learning REM and NREM sleep to memory retrieval

چکیده

It has become clear that sleep after learning beneficial effects on the later retrieval of newly acquired memories. The neural mechanisms underlying these are becoming increasingly as well, particularly those non-REM sleep. However, much is still unknown about and memory relationship: state or features physiology associate with performance often vary by task experimental design, nature this variability not entirely clear. This paper describes pertinent provides a detailed review scientific literature indicating post-learning retrieval. additionally introduces hypothesis which attributes to separable processes reinforcement refinement whereby supports one's ability retrieve given precision in context competitive alternatives. observed involved substantiation representations benefit performance; thus, primarily attributed Memory REM evidence bidirectional synaptic plasticity findings from studies selective deprivation.

Rem and Nrem Sleep Contributions in Memory for Verbal Material

1875 Scrima’s Hypothesis Revisited—Deliens et al INTRODUCTION A positive contribution of post-learning sleep in the consolidation of new information in long-term memory is now widely recognized.1-7 Beneficial effects of post-learning sleep have been highlighted for various memory systems, such as verbal declarative memory,8,9 emotional memory,10,11 or spatial learning,12 and non-declarative mot...

Correlations using the NREM-REM sleep cycle frequency support distinct regulation mechanisms for REM and NREM sleep.

Polysomnograms of most homeothermic species distinguish two states, rapid eye movement (REM) and non-REM (NREM) sleep. These alternate several times during the night for reasons and following rules that remain poorly understood. It is unknown whether each state has its own function and regulation or whether they represent two facets of the same process. The present study compared the mean REM/N...

Spatial Learning Paradigm Can Increase Post-Stress Total Time of REM Sleep in Immobilized Rats

Background & Objective: Stress contributes to sleep-wake behavior in all animals. It seems that factors such as learning and memory processes can improve sleep disorders. Therefore, the present study was conducted to determine the effects of stress and learning (spatial memory) on total post-stress rapid-eye-movement (REM), non-rapid-eye-movement (NREM) and waking time in rats. Materials & Met...

NREM and REM Sleep: Complementary Roles in Recovery after Wakefulness.

The overall function of sleep is hypothesized to provide "recovery" after preceding waking activities, thereby ensuring optimal functioning during subsequent wakefulness. However, the functional significance of the temporal dynamics of sleep, manifested in the slow homeostatic process and the alternation between non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and REM sleep remains unclear. We propose that NREM a...

Emotional arousal modulates oscillatory correlates of targeted memory reactivation during NREM, but not REM sleep

Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep is considered to preferentially reprocess emotionally arousing memories. We tested this hypothesis by cueing emotional vs. neutral memories during REM and NREM sleep and wakefulness by presenting associated verbal memory cues after learning. Here we show that cueing during NREM sleep significantly improved memory for emotional pictures, while no cueing benefit was...
